alternative pain management
CBD OIL
Cannabidiol or CBD oil has become increasingly more popular. Most likely, you or someone you know has already tried it. So, what is it? It is a molecule derived from the hemp plant, Santiva L, not to be confused with its cousin the marijuana plant, which is also a strain of Sativa. Don’t be confused; a Husky and a Lab are both dogs but different breeds. By definition, Hemp has less than 0.3% THC, the psychoactive drug that makes you “high”, whereas, Marijuana contains more than 0.3% THC. CBD can be distilled from either the Hemp or Marijuana plant. Recent law changes make CBD oil from the Hemp plant legal. If it is distilled from the marijuana plant, it is illegal.
CBD is a remarkable molecule; it is being studied for all sorts of amazing uses. Current uses include:
-
Potent anti-inflammatory
-
Chronic pain relief
-
Anxiety and depression
-
Migraine headaches
-
Epilepsy
-
Antioxidant
-
Skin disorders acne and eczema
CBD is very well tolerated when taken at recommended doses. When side effects do occur, drowsiness, is the most common, followed by diarrhea. One of the biggest problems the consumer faces is knowing what exactly they are buying. There are currently no FDA guidelines for quality assurance. MEDICAL MARIJUANA
In Pennsylvania, Medical Marijuana (MM) can be used to treat 21 medical conditions. MM unlike CBD oil, has increased THC content, the psychoactive molecule that makes you “high”. There are two main types of Cannabis, Sativa and Indica. Combinations of both form “Hybrids”. They produce differing effects. Sativas are known for their “head high,” an invigorating, energizing effect that can help reduce anxiety or stress and increase creativity and focus. Indica produces a total body high and is good for severe pain, insomnia and relaxation. Unlike Opiates, Cannabis receptors are not located in the Brain stem, where breathing is controlled. So you cannot overdose with Cannabis. This is a game changer when it comes to pain management. MM has been life changing for many of our patients.
There are hundreds of varieties. The dispensary you choose, will work with you to find the best strain for your condition. MM is not covered by insurance. Usually $100 -$150 will get you about a month’s supply.
To qualify for a MM card, you must bring your medical records with you for consultation. Appointments are on Thursday afternoons only.
